It seems that Rhodesian Ridgebacks are a wonderful breed for families, and the word is getting out. As their popularity increases, puppies are increasing in demand.
There are a great many issues to be concerned about when looking for a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy.
Of primary importance is the quality of health of the new puppy. For example, Dermoid Sinus is uniquely associated with the Rhodesain Ridgeback. The good news is that Dermoid sinus doesn't hold the threat it used to because there are so many vets familiar with the procedure to surgically remove it.
The overall "conformation" of the dogs being bred need to be investigated as well. When speaking of "conformation", we are talking about a lot more than just what a dog looks like.
The movement of a dog is also an important consideration when looking at conformation. If we look at the way the different bones attach, and their respective angles, we are looking at conformation. Improper breeding can result in a dog that is not structurally sound and can result in an incorrect gate.
Temperament is another important aspect of this breed. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is also known for a specific type of temperament, as is stated in the standard for the breed. What you will notice in the standard is that it states that the Ridgeback should show no signs of aggression. It is good with children, but toddlers may be questionable. The main thing to be concerned with when buying a Rhodesian Ridgeback pup is to find the right person to get it from. Its important to find a reputable Rhodesian Ridgeback breeder when selecting a puppy. Breeders that show their dogs in conformation events are the best people to get puppies from. Breeders who are involved in the breed are the ones who are the best ones to get a puppy from.
