Second Baby Shower Tips You Must Know
A baby shower is one of the nicest ways for new parents to acquire the items that they need to have a smooth start to parenthood. It is also a wonderful way for family and friends to show their love and support. In the past, having a second-baby shower has been frowned upon, since the parents are likely to already have the big items like high chairs and changing tables. It is now more acceptable to have a shower for a second baby, but you have to make some modifications.
You could make it an essentials-only shower, asking guests to bring items that are always needed, such as bottles (the nipples always wear out or get lost), diapers and wet wipes, and burp cloths. You can also make a list of whatever the parents say they need but did not receive with their first child. Another idea is to have a shower dedicated to the mom, where guests bring gifts that will help her relax during the last weeks of her pregnancy and after the birth. She'll appreciate receiving something soothing like aromatherapy candles, or even something for day-to-day use, like a soft robe.
You might want to make the shower focused on mom, reminding her that she will not be pregnant forever with gifts like wine or her favorite hard liquor, or savory salty snacks she may have had to give up. The guests might choose to pool together to buy a gift certificate for something extravagant like a day for two at the spa or a fancy dinner - but be sure to include babysitting arrangements. Another idea is to have a planning meeting with dad and the guests before the party, in order to schedule days and times where help is likely to be needed, using a dry-erase calendar.
Things you can help out with could include cleaning house so mom can come home from the hospital to washed dishes and folded laundry, scheduling transportation for the older child's activties, and offering to come along to do errands. The calendar can be revealed to the mom-to-be at the shower, along with all the names and phone numbers of the volunteers. There are situations where neither baby nor mom are in need of any new items. You might choose to simply have a party, inviting the mom's closest friends and family.
An optional activity is to have guests purchase small baby items and then donate them to a local shelter or charity. Another fun way to organize a shower for a second baby is to have a “freezer party” where guests bring dishes that can be frozen or otherwise easily stored. This will definitely help out mom in the last days before her due date and also those following the birth. Obviously, you'll want to check with mom to see if she has adequate room in her freezer for al the goodies, as well as select a party date close to her delivery date.
Lastly, it is acceptable to hold a full, as-if-it-were-the-first-baby shower in the case of a "caboose" baby - one who, as the name implies, is being born several years after the last child. A lot of moms and dads won't likely have even the big items (cribs, etc.), anymore, or they could be outdated in terms of safety requirements.
Regardless of the type of shower you are holding or if the gifts are large or small, remember that you are there to let the mom know that she and her new baby have all your love and support.
